T-Mobile Releases it’s Second Android Handset, The MyTouch In August

Tags: , , , , , ,

To round out the smartphone debuts, comes the second Android handset from T-Mobile. The G1 has been out for a while now, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve been waiting for Android to come out with some new handsets. Coming in August, T-Mo will drop the MyTouch for $199. It’s a completely different handset from the G1, basically it’s the Google Ion that was given to peeps at the Google I/O conference, and the HTC Magic, which was released in Canada and overseas.

The name of the phone, myTouch, goes with the big ethos of this phone: Customizability. Users will be able to customize the menus, wallpapers, icon and a range of other things on the device with the use of themes and skins. The handset will come in 3 colors, black, white, and merlot, and there will also be options to customize the shell of the unit also.

The phone will also get to know you and your search habits over time, how very Google of them:

“The other key point T-Mobile is touting for the myTouch is something called Sherpa, which T-Mobile worked with startup Geodelic to create. Basically, Sherpa is an application that claims to learn from a user’s actions. So, for example, if you’re searching a lot of Thai food, Sherpa should recognize that as something that you like in the future. And it uses your location information to give you tailored results for what it believes you will want based on what you’re around.”

The Hardware

While the myTouch keeps it’s 528 MHz processor, it has doubled it’s internal memory to 512 MB which bumps up the loading of apps and also makes the apps run more smoothly than on the G1. The screen size and resolution is the same as the G1, and unfortunately, is still not multi-touch. The camera is 3.2 megapixel with autofocus, comes with a 4-GB microSD card.

The big difference is that they did away with the physical keyboard. It’s running the Cupcake OS build, and the myTouch will now have a virtual keyboard. This makes for a slimmer, sleeker, and lighter handset.

While these some of these specs are admittedly, slightly meh, there is one big improvement. They did improve the battery life, which was the biggest complaint that users had with the G1. According to TechCrunch, “Well just in everyday use with a couple applications running in the background, my G1 battery would be gone in a few hours. The myTouch battery easily lasts all day in the same environment.”

Existing T-Mobile customers can pre-order the myTouch starting July 8. The device will be $199 with a 2-year agreement, and availability is set for early August.

iPhone 3G S: Snooze, You Lose. Pre-Orders are Already Out of Stock.

Tags: , , , , ,

Well, you don’t really lose. You just have to wait a couple more weeks before you can get your new iPhone 3GS. If you put in your order now, your new baby will be delivered to you and you won’t have to go to the Apple Store to pick it up.

If you have put in your pre-order order, you are ate least guaranteed a slot at the Apple Store in the 7am power hour to get your new baby. The rest of the masses will have to gear up and be ready to throw down to fight for the remaining stock when the Apple Store opens at 8am or go to your local ATT store.

So, gear up. Either for your camp out at the Apple Store, or for your battle to get your hands on the remaining stock. Good Luck all!

Palm Pre- It’s Got a Mirror. Fresh!

Tags: , , , , ,

My favorite detail about about the Palm Pre- it’s got a mirror on the back of it!
Ok, it’s not super techy, and it’s bordering on super girly, but back in the day, I had a neat little sticker on the back of my first gen LG V that was a mirror. Since I always had my phone either in hand or out on whatever flat surface was in front of me, this detail was super convenient. One of those things that you never realized was a great feature until you didn’t have it anymore. My pout was always properly glossed without ever having to rummage through my bag for a compact or a purse mirror (which I never had on me anyway, as I am of the tiny purse persuasion) and I could always check my teeth for food or peep what’s goin on behind me if needed.
Since then, I’ve gone through 2 more incarnations of the LG V, which is now the enV and the one thing I miss is that little mirror sticker.

Back when the Palm Pre was announced and swept CES, it really seemed like it was going to be a phone to be reckoned with. Since CES, they’ve been teasing us with vague news about pricing, release dates, and even trying to conjure up feelings of shortage (Nintendo Wii strategy?) Then this little byte came out today – the Pre has a mirror on the back of it. It’s got a slider phone design, and when you slide the keyboard out, the back of the top houses the mirror. Oooh. That’s some clever design. Usually that space goes unused. Some feel that this is a marketing ploy to draw women, but I feel it’s a nice little design bonus.
Blogger Joanna Stern got to check out the mirror, hands on, and sums it up nicely: “Whether the integrated rear-view mirror was
intended or not for women, it is a welcome feature and adds some pizazz
to the backside of the phone. And let’s be honest, there is no app for
that.”

Sony Ericsson Yari and Aino. Will These Come to the States?

Sony Ericsson adds Yari and Aino to its multimedia line

I’m generally not a fan of Sony Products, but the Ericsson stuff is so sexxy. Check on these two mulitmedia devices that are coming out …somewhere else other than the States – from Engadget mobile:

he Yari slider (pictured left) is being billed as a gaming device, featuring gesture-controlled actions in the same vein as the Wii (and for the record, that’s Sony Ericsson’s comparison as much as it is ours). It features a 2.4-inch display, GPS, and support for the company’s PlayNow services; it’ll be available in the fourth quarter for about €400 ($558) unlocked. Next up, the Aino takes some cues from the Satio with a relatively large 3-inch touchscreen — but also tosses in a numeric slider for good measure. It’s got an 8.1 megapixel cam, Sony Remote Play support, GPS, HSPA, and a scratch-resistant mineral glass display; it’ll be ready to rock in the same timeframe as the Yari in black and white, though we don’t have pricing stats just yet — needless to say, it’ll be more than the Yari.

Talk Green With Motorola’s Renew

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

In the spirit of the upcoming Earth Day, let’s peep the Motorola Renew, available from TMo.
A cute little bar phone, in green and white of course. Can’t have a “green” phone without it being colored green, can you?
The hook is that it has ecologically responsible retail packaging, includes a postage paid recycling envelope. The phone itself is made from recycled water bottles, and the plastic housing is 100% recyclable. Also, the battery life is upwards of 9hrs, so there is less charging time needed for this phone. This phone also claims to be certified carbonfree through carbonfund.org. Through this Alliance, they will be used to offset the energy to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone by investing in renewable energy sources and reforestation.

Skype Comes to iPhone Sooner, to Blackberry, Later.

Tags: , , , ,

The official Skype app will be in the Apple App Store Tomorrow, March 31st, and Blackberry users can expect to see one around May of this year.

The iPhone’s Skype feature set includes free Skype to Skype calls, SkypeOut support, a pretty interface that is keeping with the iPhone interface, and instant messaging. You can also take a picture from within the app, and accept conference calls. The app will also work on 2G iPod Touches that have the external mic.

Caveats are: only being able to use on a wi-fi connection, as there is a ban on any VoIP on a 3G network, no text messaging, file transfer, or access to your Skype voicemails.

I’ve been using the Fring app for a while now, and it’s a great multi-protocol client that supports talk, chat, and Skype already….jus sayin.
