June marks the official start of hurricane season here in New Orleans and in the Gulf Coast Region. Has your business updated their Crisis Situation Guide and Procedures this year? What makes this year so different? There are now many Web 2.0 tools to incorporate into your Hurricane and Disaster Protocols. Businesses like FS&C and LaunchPad have embraced Social Media and web tools such as Twitter, Skype, and Google Groups to keep in touch with their co-workers.
Personally, I used Twitter and Facebook during my Gustav evacuation not only to find out where my loved ones were, but to get news and updates via my Twitter stream about the city, roadblocks, traffic, down to if there was power back on in my very neighborhood. I even made some new friends from this Twitter-vacuation experience.
Social Media can be a powerful tool to help keep in touch with people during a crisis situation, and we at Social Media Club NO would like to take this opportunity to share and discuss with all our guests how you and your workplace can integrate Web 2.0 tools into your Crisis/Disaster Protocol.
So if you would like to know more about using these tools, join us for our monthly gathering on Thursday, June 18th, 6pm at Launchpad. This month’s meeting is focusing on this exact topic. We will have engaging speakers who have embraced Social Media practices and have made major changes in the way they organize, volunteer and track major events when disaster strikes:
Stanford Rosenthal of www.levees.org will discuss how they realized that there was a conversation goin on outside of their site and how they integrated tools to embrace and engage in the community dialogue and comments, and the “reputation management” that comes into play if and when you have to go up against a Goliath like the Corps of Engineers.Robert X. Fogarty of www.evacuteer.org, a volunteer recruitment and management organization will discuss how they are utilizing new tools to manage volunteers and to help organize the evacuation process.
Kayla Castille, of WDSU will discuss how the media is changing and embracing new web tools to track real time events and developments, particularly in crisis situations.
We at Social Media Club NO are very excited to have these guests to share and dialogue with everyone about these very valuable tools. In addition, we will have great giveaways and refreshments, and this is also an opportunity for you to come visit Launchpad, which opened their doors officially this month [Congratulations!] and as always, we provide an open venue for networking, socializing and learning!
